Experience they say is the best teacher. I believe it often depends on how much wisdom we apply to the knowledge gained from experience.
It often surprises me how often we repeat the same mistakes everyday. Sometimes, it happens out of habit, sometimes out of lack of adequate knowledge but mostly the mistakes come from the lack of openness to accept that our some of our choices give us a good chance of doing well or failing.
I noticed a headline on a women’s magazine the other day, it read ‘How to keep a man happy’. Out of curiosity, I opened up the page. It had all this advice on how to be patient, loving and helpful. Everything it mentioned ticked the right boxes. I noticed it didn’t pay attention to the fact that sometimes, you can do everything right and it can still go wrong. It also never mentioned that sometimes it could just be as simple as not giving your pearls to swine meaning ‘be careful who you give your affection to’. I’ve always felt the best advice is for each person is to find things in their own life that make them happy and that often extends into relationships.
I always knew that it was going to be tough trying to start my own business. It hasn’t helped that procrastinating and being lazy comes naturally to me. In my favour, I’ve always been very patient, a good listener and a quick learner.
I sat there munching a free sandwich as a few players cashed out in a local casino. One player had won a lot of money and he was being celebrated around the casino. It was New Year’s Eve and there was a lot of laughter and glamour on the casino floor.
When the lottery commercial said ‘It could be you !’, all I heard was, ‘it will be me !’. This was in 1994 when the National lottery was the new dream in London. I would religiously buy my ticket(s) and station myself in front of the TV at five minutes to eight every Saturday evening. I didn’t want to miss any second of them calling out my numbers, I wanted the full experience. We created syndicates, allocated money in advance if a holiday was due and dreamt about winning all the time.
